Glenn Close Loses at the Oscars. Again!
Seven nominations later, Glenn Close remains Oscar-less, retaining her less-than-enviable title of most nominated living actor, male or female, without a statuette.
Oscar-less
Oscar+less,表示“没有获得奥斯卡奖的”,英文解释为“Not winning, or having won, an Oscar (an Academy Award)”;
-less后缀:-less is added to nouns in order to form adjectives that indicate that someone or something does not have the thing that the noun refers to.
retain
表示“保留,保有;继续拥有”,英文解释为“to keep something or continue to have something”举个🌰:
You have the right to retain possession of the goods.
less than adj.
表示“缺少,缺乏,一点也不”,英文解释为“used to say that behaviour does not have the good or attractive characteristic that is stated”,如:less than helpful/honest/enthusiastic 一点也没有帮助/一点也不诚实/一点也不热心,举个🌰:
I think he was less than honest with me.
enviable表示“令人羡慕的”(an enviable quality, position, or possession is good and other people would like to have it)。
statuette
statuette /ˌstætjʊˈɛt/表示“小雕像,小塑像”,英文解释为“a very small statue that can be put on a table or shelf”。
Close had been the best actress favorite for much of awards season, but it was Olivia Colman, of “The Favourite,” who clinched the win at Sunday night's ceremony.
clinch
表示“最终获得,赢得”,英文解释为“to finally agree on something or get something after trying very hard”举个🌰:
Her second-place finish in the final race was enough to clinch the overall victory.
“Glenn Close, you've been my idol for so long,” Colman said in her acceptance speech. “This isn't how I wanted it to be.”
Close, who resembled an Oscar statuette herself in a gold dress that weighed over 40 pounds, won a Golden Globe in January for her role in “The Wife.” In her emotional speech at the time, Close, who seemed surprised by her achievement, said: “It will have been 45 years in September that I am a working actress. And I cannot imagine a more wonderful life.”
resemble
相似”,英文解释为“If one thing or person resembles another, they are similar to each other.”
He grew up to resemble his father.
The actress's dry spell has lasted decades. In the 1980s, she racked up five nominations, for “The World According to Garp,” “The Big Chill,” “The Natural,” “Fatal Attraction” and “Dangerous Liaisons.” She wasn't nominated again until 2011, for “Albert Nobbs.”
dry spell
spell熟词僻义,作名词表示“(某种活动、天气、疾病等的)一段时间(通常时间较短)”,英文解释为“a period of a particular kind of activity, weather, illness etc, usually a short period ”,如:a spell of bad luck 一段倒霉的日子,dry spell原意指的就是“干旱期;(气候)干期”,此处意思为“A period or time where there is little activity, productivity, low income etc.”
Nipping at Close's heels for the most nominations without any wins is Amy Adams, who lost a sixth time on Sunday for her turn as Lynne Cheney, the wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, in “Vice.”
nip at one's heels
有个成语叫望其项背,大概就是紧追在别人的后面的意思,英文解释为“to be almost as good as someone that you are competing with”举个🌰:The second place team is nipping at the heels of the leaders.
类似的有:snap at one's heels表示“与(某人)一决高下,对(某人)紧追不舍”(to compete strongly with someone and have a chance of soon defeating or replacing them)举个🌰:
With so many younger women snapping at her heels, this year may be her last chance to win the championship.
Though seven is a lot of Oscar losses, Close is not the most losing actor of all time. Peter O’Toole earned eight nominations and Richard Burton earned seven. (O’Toole was awarded an honorary Oscar.)
Last month, when asked if winning even matters at this point, Close told The New York Times: “If I, in my heart and soul, feel that I've fulfilled the challenges of a certain character, that's where I find my personal fulfillment. I don't feel like I need to be validated by some award, even though in the nature of our business, it does mean something.”
validate
有价值”,英文解释为“To validate a person, state, or system means to prove or confirm that they are valuable or worthwhile.”
The Academy Awards appear to validate his career.
